A three-channel video installation that reimagines Gaia, the earth goddess of Greek mythology, as a woman exhausted by demands to produce and care for others. One component of the work is a workshop drawing on a passage from Naoko Miyaji’s Ring-Shaped Island: The Geopolitics of Trauma. Participants touch the artist’s reclining naked body as an island or as a woman, opening a dialogue about trauma and the violence inflicted on bodies and land. A computer-generated island, animated by the subtle tremors and breathing of the artist wearing a motion-capture suit, eventually rises and moves across the sea. This perverse process questions norms that value women and nature according to their productivity, revealing the artist’s own contradictory position: a woman who desires Gaia’s liberation, yet also a human being who exploits the earth.
