Humans possess two eyes, each receiving a different image, which are then integrated in the brain to form a single perception. In this work, that mechanism is externalized: using the bodies of the artist and a friend, each participant covers one of the other’s eyes, creating a situation in which the portion of one’s own vision that is obscured is, in a sense, “held” by the other. Each holds a camera release and presses the shutter at the moment they feel the image has come into focus. The two photographs, placed side by side, function as if they were a pair of eyes, yet they emerge as an image without a single center. The point of focus remains unsettled, and the subject of vision continues to waver. Through this unstable structure, the work attempts to push perception—normally understood as internal to the body—outside of it, reconfiguring it as something distributed between bodies.
